Brand vs non-brand: the number your agency hopes you never split

If a big share of your "performance" is people typing your own name, you are paying an agency to take credit for demand you already built.

Someone who searches your brand name was already coming. They saw you on Instagram, or bought before, or a friend told them. Serving them an ad is cheap and converts brilliantly — and it creates almost no new revenue.

Why it matters so much

Brand traffic is the single easiest way for an account to look healthy while the business stalls. Blended ROAS stays high, the monthly report is full of green, and total revenue does not move. Meanwhile the campaigns that could find new customers get starved, because the blended number said everything was fine.

It is worse with Performance Max, which will absorb brand searches invisibly unless you fence it off.

How to separate it

  1. Create a dedicated brand Search campaign — exact and phrase match on your brand name and common misspellings.
  2. Add your brand terms as negatives to non-brand campaigns, so the two stop overlapping.
  3. Exclude brand from PMax where the account allows it.
  4. Report the two separately. Forever. They answer different questions.

Should you bid on your own brand at all?

It depends on whether competitors are bidding on it. If they are, brand clicks are cheap defence. If nobody is, you may be paying for clicks you would have had free — worth testing by pausing for a fortnight and watching total revenue, not campaign revenue.

Either way, the decision should be deliberate and visible. What it should never be is hidden inside a blended number that makes an agency look better than it is.

Ask your agency for brand versus non-brand spend and return, split out. The answer, and how long it takes them to produce it, tells you a lot.
